Overview of the D-558 Program

under constructionThe D-558 program was a joint venture between the Navy and Douglas to investigate supersonic flight and, if possible, develop a new class of fighter aircraft. There were two aircraft in the program, the D-558-1 Skystreak and the D-558-2 Skyrocket.

There is some pretty good information about this program on the web, so I'm not going to try to duplicate this effort. If you want to learn more, a good starting place is the eBook Toward Mach 2: the Douglas D-558 Program available on the NASA web site.

To better understand the program from Gene's perspective, I have some thoughts and clarification that I will be adding to this page once I get that magical round tuit :-)
